Longdendale - A Brief History
Longdendale is steeped in local legend and ancient history. The Longdendale valley has
for many years been part of a trading route across the Pennines from Lancashire into
Yorkshire. In the past, salt would be transported from Cheshire. Mottram became a village to pause
at before the long journey through the valley and over the bleak hills into Yorkshire. The
inns catered for the weary traveller while the local blacksmith would tend to the horses.
