Roe Cross - History

Spout Green (1907) Spout Green in 1907. All the houses except for those in the forground have been replaced by the housing estate of Roe Cross Green.

Roe Cross itself is situated at the foot of Hobson Moor and about half a mile from the centre of Mottram on the main road from Stalybridge. There is favourable mention of an ancient building at Roe Cross in Dr. Aikin's work of 1795.

The Historian, Butterworth also gives Roe Cross a mention by once saying "Roe Cross has been rendered popular from the traditionary account of the adventures of Sir Ralph Staveleigh".

Much has changed over the years with the new road from Stalybridge being 'cut' through the hillside in 1825 taking over from the Old Mottram road.
