If you are suffering from ME / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or are caring for an ME sufferer then this page is for you! What is ME? ME is Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, meaning "inflamation of the central nervous system and muscles", a neurological disease which affects the brain at a physical, mental and emotional level. Most sufferrers prefer the term "ME" but more and more doctors now use the term "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome". ME is recognised by the Departments of Health and Social Security as "a debilitating and distressing condition". What are the symptoms? ME is a disorder characterised by extreme fatigue, muscle pain and severe flu-like malasie. Other symptoms include difficulties with concentration and memory, loss of balance, digestive problems, poor temperature control and mood swings. How many people are affected and what is the prognosis? It is estimated that there are more than 150,000 sufferers in the UK, of whom around 25,000 are children. At present 20% of sufferers regain full health within two years, but around 60% never regain their previous level of health and up to 20% become permanently disabled. Early diagnosis and appropriate advice on managing the illness is crucial. Tameside and Glossop ME Support Group - We are a self-help group run entirely by sufferers and carers offering moral support, advice and tips on how best to cope with the illness. As sufferers ourselves we KNOW what it's like to be ill with ME! We have a quarterly newsletter, called "Our Newsletter", a lively publication, free to all members - written contributions are always welcome! We have a group library containing many POSITIVE publications on ME, freely available to all group members on request. We hold regular group meetings at alternative venues in Hyde and Glossop (details of the meetings announced in 'Our Newsletter'). Members may also take advantage of our Penfriend and Telephone Friend service should they wish. Maybe you will find a new ME friend too!
